Our Story

Esprit des Roches:

Founded in 1899 by the sociologist Edmond Demolins, École des Roches was the first ‘new school’ of France — an innovative approach to education seen as ahead of its time. Based on universal and deeply humanist values, we work with each student to promote their love of learning, awaken their intellectual curiosity, and develop them today to prepare for the rest of their lives.

1899

The Founding

Edmond Demolins founds École des Roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre, Normandy. Inspired by English public schools, he creates France’s first ‘école nouvelle’ — a school built on the revolutionary idea that education should develop the whole person: mind, body, and character. The original boarding houses Le Vallon, Les Pins, Le Coteau, Les Sablons, and La Guichardière open between 1899–1902.

1911

Scouting Begins

Scouting is introduced at École des Roches — equipping students with practical skills for life, leadership, and service. One of the earliest schools in France to adopt the movement.

1912

A French First

The first swimming pool in a French school is opened at École des Roches. A symbol of the school’s commitment to physical education and innovation.

1940–1944

War & Resilience

World events reach the school as students are evacuated and the German Army occupies the campus. In 1944, the school is liberated and normal school life is re-established. A testament to resilience and continuity.

1968

Doors Open

The school welcomes its first female students, transforming into a co-educational institution and doubling its potential impact.

1944 onwards

Growth Over the Decades:

The campus grows to 50 hectares (150 acres). Boarding houses increase to accommodate a growing international community. The school evolves from a purely French institution to a truly global one, welcoming students from 40+ nations.

2024–2025

A New Chapter

École des Roches begins a new era. New leadership, new partnerships, renewed commitment to academic excellence. The spirit of Demolins lives on: Think, Dare, Share, Care.

A sociologist who believed education should be about real life, not just exams

Édmond Demolins was a pioneering sociologist, not a career schoolmaster. He founded École des Roches in 1899 believing passionately that education should prepare students for the real world — developing character, resilience, and independence alongside academic rigour. Radical for the time. Proven over 125 years.

1899

Among the first schools in France to embrace scouting

Just a few years after Baden-Powell ran his first scout camp, the movement took root at École des Roches. It wasn’t a fad — it was a natural fit for a school that already believed character was forged outside the classroom. Map-reading, knot-tying, teamwork under open skies. Skills for life, not just exams.

1911

The first swimming pool in any French school

Long before swimming made the national curriculum, École des Roches built a pool. The thinking was simple: physical confidence and water safety mattered as much as Latin verbs. Unheard of in 1912 — and quietly, completely typical of this school.

1912

When the war came, the school moved — but refused to close

As German forces advanced through Normandy, students and staff were evacuated south to Maslacq in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The Verneuil campus fell under occupation. But teaching never stopped. Lessons continued in borrowed buildings, hundreds of miles from home. Education as quiet resistance.

1940

Freed from occupation, and growing again within years

With Normandy liberated, the school reclaimed its campus and reopened its doors. From 150 pupils in 1944 to 350 by 1948 — families across France and beyond wanted exactly the education the school had spent four years protecting. Resilience, in numbers.

1944

The first female students arrived — and changed the school forever

Sixty-nine years after the founding, École des Roches welcomed its first girls. A long-overdue moment, and the right one. Today young women shape every part of school life — sport, leadership, the classroom, the boarding houses. The Rocheux spirit, in full.

1968

125 years on — still preparing students for real life, not just exams

Today, École des Roches is home to students from over 50 countries, learning across six historic boarding houses on a 60-hectare Normandy campus. The IB and French Baccalaureate sit alongside more than thirty sports and creative pursuits — fencing, robotics, theatre, golf. The setting has evolved. The thinking hasn’t.
